Now for those of you who were getting excited by the semblance of the guy on this cover to Jotaro, I’m sorry, but this is NOT Stardust Crusaders. What it is, though, is manly-man MANga arist Akira Miyashita’s debut work, published long before Otokojuku, even before such Shonen Jump classics as Hokuto no Ken and Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure (and I’m wondering whether it was actually Masa that inspired Jotaro’s look…).
So, what’s this manga about, and why should you read it? Well, apparently Miyashita really liked the whole “unusual school” setting, cause this manga is about a school built by the yakuza for future yakuza! So you get to enjoy the manly adventures of School-cap Masa and the rest of the gang as they try to survive in this hell of a school! If you like any other of Miyashita’s manga, or if you like yakuza manga in general, you’re gonna love this one!

Finally, a note on the translation of this title: The Japanese title is “Shiritsu Kiwamemichi Koukou”, but the kanji for “Kiwamemichi” are usually read as “Gokudo”, a word referring to the yakuza, gangsters, or the criminal underworld in general. By indicating it’s read as “Kiwamemichi”, Miyashita is showing that they are meant to be read separately, as the words “Ultimate” and “Path”, intending it to be a statement on how the path of the Yakuza is the “ultimate path”.
