MrGerbik – I once read that Tetsuo Hara is reluctant to hand out the North American license to another company ever since Gutsoon folded (which was an American subsidiary of Coamix), even though other companies apparently expressed interest. It doesn’t make much sense, considering most of the new Hokuto stuff has already been officially licensed in France and Italy.

      @Jonny2x4

makes sense, but still sucks for us. lol

    8. Lord Dio says:

Maybe Tetsuo Hara hates us Americans or something, heh. Regardless, with the HnG translating Hokuto material like a vicious Terminator, not even that will stop its eventual consumption by English-speaking fans.

I dont watch the anime often because i prefer the manga, but that screencap convinced me to dl this ep!

Thanks a lot for the release! Tai-Yan alone makes this episode a 10/10!

There’s still a possibility they might license the new Hokuto movies and the Souten TV series, considering Gaga has a page for both in English.

Would it really be worth it to license Souten for foreign audiences? Wasn’t it canceled in Japan due to low ratings? I mean, I really like the Hokuto family of manga and anime but I thought the Souten tv series just wasn’t very popular.

      Can anyone confirm/deny?

At least ya can always count on a male’s sex drive when choosing a screencap to post an ep with.

Anyway, good work on this. Now we’re nearing the end. Unfortunately that the series got canned though. I like the franchise, but I prefer it in current day technology/artwork. The old stuff’s fine and all, but it still feels like ya’re stuck in the past.

    14. Sklave says:

actually I meant that the anime got canceled. As far as I know the manga is still alive and well.

I really can’t say I blame Tetsuo Hara for not wanting to relicense Souten to any US labels . His franchises have terrible luck over here. I think Geneon dubbed all of 10 episodes of HnK before dropping it, and then Gutsoon only pumped out 4 volumes of SnK before dropping it. It seems like Hokuto just isn’t popular enough over here.

    15. Noor says:

it’s such a shame! Some of the stories in HNK 1 were amazing! Especially the Rei episodes. The initial episodes with Shin I have to say were quite dull, with too many episodes having regular thugs jumpin around and getting the crap beaten out of them, they just didn’t have the same feel as the later episodes where more powerful foes were involved, perhaps that’s why the english dubbed edition totally failed.

I started watching HNK when I was around 15 I’d say, it’s been 11 years since and I’ve just recently finished watching ALL the episodes, thanks to HOM. I made a website when I was around 18, just for fun – go check it out, totally non-profit :p

Sklave – It was Manga Entertainment who dub the Hokuto no Ken TV series in the late 90’s, not Geneon (unless you know something I’m not aware of). They did only the first 36 episodes (up to the Amiba arc). To be fair, they were released at a time when VHS was the primary home video format (DVDs had yet to catch on and very few anime series sold well as movies on home video, even OVA series were edited and sold as films) and the dubbing quality was mediocre in my opinion with an unnecessary replacement soundtrack, but I think a decent dub of the series on DVD could’ve the possibility of doing well.

AFAIK, the Souten TV series are already licensed in France and Italy. I personally didn’t like the Souten TV series. Too much boring filler in my opinion.

    17. Sklave says:

@Jonny: My mistake, I think I had heard that Geneon had picked up the HnK license only to drop it without getting any work done on it.

    18. Sklave says:

@Noor: I think you may be on to something with the idea that the Shin episodes may have turned people off of the anime. Most of my friends that i tried to get to watch HnK got too bored in that arc.

    19. KSMLM says:

I just laughed my way through the Shin arc. YMCA rejects, zombies, witches, people being fired out of cannons…

Shin threw everything and the kitchen sink at Ken. The only bit of the filler I could take seriously was Shin’s cool fight against Barcom, but that’s just copied from the Hokuto Origins story.
