The new almost 400-page KITARO omnibus (?) from Drawn & Quarterly is out and for sale. I just purchased it and it is really quite nice. Support the industry.
Yep. The Drawn & Quarterly release covers volumes 4-5 (which we’ve already completed).
Don’t get me wrong. I enjoy the releases Hokuto no Gun puts out but given some free image files or an actual, official physical book, I personally will choose the book every time. Or DVD/BD. I think your partner, Skaro Hunting Society, does it right. As long as the title is not officially licensed in US (I am guessing you are in North America somewhere…) then it is fair game. Once a title is licensed, then fansubbed items get pulled and if one wants to continue with a story, they purchase it – and it supports the Anime/Manga industry. Just my opinion.
That’s generally our practice too, unless the official releases completely cock it up (like Bo-bobo) or are out of print. With Kitaro, though, it’s a little more tricky. See, Mizuki didn’t write just one Kitaro series, he wrote several, and the “complete collection” has about three of those. Volumes 4-5 contain the original series, which is the one Drawn & Quarterly published, and we finished those before they released it. Judging by the fact that these other series are much lesser-known, I highly doubt Drawn & Quarterly intends to publish them. So yes, people, by all means support the industry, but come to us for the stuff they won’t do.
