Well… It’s over. Sabu and Ichi is finally complete. And this last case has everything you could ask for from Sabu and Ichi: There’s an interesting (if a little cliche) case to be solved, a really sweet fight scene, and of course Shotaro will be damned if he gives you a satisfying conclusion of any sort.
Well… This may have been one of the hardest manga for me to translate and the one involving the most research, and figuring out the old-time dialects was not a fun time. But I think it was worth it in the end. I’ve said this before elsewhere, and I’ll say it again here. As much as it’s a comic book, Sabu and Ichi is a great literary example of realism, in that it focuses on the everyday plights of the lower classes as they are, free of any idealism or romanticism. From one perspective Sabu and Ichi are yet another take on the detective duo, but from another perspective they are at the lowest of the low on the social order, doing everything they can with what little power they have to do some good in this world. And of course, sometimes there’s nothing they can do, and that’s what they have to deal with. So kudos to you, Shotaro Ishinomori, for writing this piece of art. And a big thank you to Wright from HappyScans for introducing me to this and taking part in the process the whole way through, and also Angel_of_Chaotix and kazuhiko1412 for sticking with me to the bitter end. And of course, if you’re still craving action from this duo, just wait for Nanto and I to get more of the anime out!
