I have always found the conquest of america by a bunch of brutes that didn’t even knew how to sail as one of the most insulting things in the history of the world.
And it could have ended there but they insisted for centuries to keep calling the natives Indians despite it being clear that it was not India, so it transitioned to “indigenous people” as a poor patchwork to fix the language and the misdeed.
And now finally we are using native americans as a designation, however i can’t think of any other event that was such a failure to the point that it butchered several european languages and it remained that way by sheer ignorance and brutish pride.
