I really liked the book Silence and Scorsese’s film adaptation. It really drove home the reality of the persecution of Christianity in Tokugawa Japan, and the impossible dilemmas that people were forced into, with a lot of nuance and honest reflection on religious symbols and their meaning, betrayal, forgiveness, and faith, handling them with subtlety and sensitivity.
Anyway, here’s Haohmaru bashing a demon soldier over the head with a fumie.
